Animal Sci-fi / Sci-fi Animal Tristan Barlow & Agniezska Katz Barlow
January 16 - January 20
SCI-FI ANIMAL / ANIMAL SCI-FI
“It is the thunderbolt that steers the course of all things.”
SCI-FI ANIMAL/ANIMAL SCI-FI brings together two bodies of work created in close dialogue. Agnieszka Katz Barlow’s “I run on all fours” and Tristan Barlow’s “Primavera” are the outcome of an intense artistic dialogue involving discussions and reflections about the visual thinking process, anthropocentric phenomena, social structures, and the pursuit of freedom. The artists have worked in close proximity of each other, exchanging imagery, thoughts, and ideas. The two bodies of work both exhibit a world of invented mythologies, symbols, and personal language.
The culmination of this dialogue questions our primal nature, our digital tools, and sharp moments of brief understanding that hit the nervous system as we try to decipher what is nature, what is nurture and where it might head.
Tristan’s paintings, expansive, visionary, and fragmented, contain a sense of luminosity that works its way out from the painting. They recall glimmers of Art History yet move towards a more cerebral space, the universe, symbols, the digital, dark space; a sci-fi landscape in which thoughts remain preverbal and primordial in nature.
Agnieszka’s work is primal, bold and refers loosely to becoming animal. Avoiding binary ideologies and instead embracing ambivalent spaces and anarchic identities, the work is a balancing act of paradoxes.
Seemingly fast yet slow, playful but with dark undertones, masculine and feminine, abstract yet figurative – the work is an expression of visual intellect from a digested inner pulp that can only exist within the language of painting.
