“If the earth displays a varicoloured countenance, it is thanks to the atmosphere, which filters that murderous light” Italo Calvino “Cosmicomics”
The artists in “without shores” occupy a spectrum between the earthbound and the cosmic. Developing works in conjunction with scientific research, the exhibition charts a course from which astronomical observation becomes a point of departure.
From Katie Goodwin’s film meditating upon the astronomers desire to circumnavigate the urban light noise that restricts the view of the night sky, through Inês Rebelo’s spectral portal, based on the electromagnetic spectrum, from Robert Orchardson’s cyanotypes inspired by astronomical paraphernalia of astronomers William and John Hershel to Karen David’s extra-terrestrial expanded painting. Each artists work is grounded in rigorous research and plays with scientific narratives and observational filters to reflect upon the generative capacity of our ideas of the celestial, the invisible and the imagined.
Karen David is a London based artist who graduated MA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2012, receiving the Purchase Award by Landmark Plc and shortlisted for the Clifford Chance Sculpture Award.
