ASC Window Space | Anthony Ruby | The Painted Icon
06/03/2013 - 05/04/2013
The work shown in The Painted Icon is a contemporary take on the Greek term eikon meaning ‘image’, that is, the revered image.
‘Theology in colour’ was how the Russian thinker Eugene Trubetskoy characterised icons.
‘In one sense, icons can only be understood in the context of Orthodox Christian theology. In another, the icon’s nature as a revered image that is constantly reproduced permeates modern art. Pop art took the fetishistic ‘worship’ of commercial products and celebrities as one of its primary themes’.
( 100 Ideas that Changed Art – Michael Bird – 2012)
The Painted Icon has evolved through Anthony’s travels in Eastern Europe in the summer of 2012. The aesthetic beauty of various sacred objects and images he viewed in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey has influenced his concerns with the object and the painted image.
