Kate Pickering’s work addresses the enchantment inherent in certain forms of religious practice and the persuasive presence of the charismatic preacher. The Believers draws on Christian revivalist traditions, including the ‘serpent’ handling of American evangelicalism, Robert DuVall’s character Sonny in the film The Apostle and the Price family of Barbara Kingsolver’s novel The Poisonwood Bible. These and other references combine to form an installation of writing, drawing, video and found imagery.
Charlotte Warne Thomas’ recent work explores the myths of free will and individual choice as products of neoliberal ideology and the consumer subject. Her work incorporates the imagery and rhetoric deployed by fields as diverse as advertising, architecture, domesticity and bureaucracy to evoke the power structures inherent in the mundane institutions of everyday life.
Pickering lives and works in London. She graduated from Goldsmiths MFA in 2009 and has since exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include National Open at Motorcade/FlashParade (UK), Sentences at Bury Art Museum (UK), Fact at ROOM (UK) and Murmur at Waterside Contemporary (UK) and video festivals in Thailand, Spain, India and China.
Warne Thomas is based in London. She graduated from Goldsmiths MFA in 2009, and has gone on to exhibit nationally and internationally, participating in group shows including Overview at Frans Masereel Centrum (BE), Translate/Transcribe at Art Moscow (RU), Creekside Open (selected by Dexter Dalwood) at APT Gallery (UK), Deptford X 2011 (UK) and The Object of the Attack at David Roberts Art Foundation.
In conjunction with their art practices, Pickering and Warne Thomas coordinate Peer Sessions, a non-profit crit group and peer support network for practicing arts professionals, which they founded in 2009. They are both based in Bond House studios.
