ASC and Cruz & Moran are delighted to announce the opening of domain of sensible knowledge.
The artists work with paint and images in unexpected ways, using a variety of traditional and experimental materials. Tina Jenkins makes her large, bold paintings on plastic sheeting, breaking down the image into a series of gestural marks that flow freely within rigid structural boundaries and form striped or drapey patterns. She describes her process as a hysterical act. Sally Kindberg uses images of disparate objects, shapes, patterns and subjects, seamlessly combining different styles in smooth slick oil paint, to create startling and often hilarious compositions that flatten image hierarchies. Mark Jackson explores the lone human subject in complex and highly layered oil paintings, conjuring a world that pulses with glowing screen-like colour and fragmented gestures. Broadly inspired by the history of figure painting, Jackson’s personal vision re-situates the human form in a new imaginary aesthetic realm. Stephanie Moran constructs group tableaux images of temporary euphoric kinships, depicting redemptively blissful communions, from orgiastic violence to ecstatic trance-states, in lurid colour scattered with glitter like broken glass and parties. Cynthia Cruz selects disturbing online images that form a digitally collaged underpainting, then layers enamel paints and mediums, material viscosities accentuating the stickiness of an open wound or the fluidity of blood and pus, spatters and drips in a non-judgmental way, unified using principles of design.
These artists all deal with the circulation and subjective truth of images through their substantiation in painty materiality: whether transmogrified, transfigured or mathematically transformed, the circulated image is processually and concretely incarnated as a singularity.
They question the manufacturing of meaning through painting via the significance we give to it, particularly affective significance and, consequently, the [Kantian] relation of meaning to free will and determinism. They interrogate the abductive, or speculative, thought of painting via a variety of techniques, from slick precision to excessive gesturality; each artist employs a combination of representation and abstraction, fetishising digitally enhanced color. They acknowledge the coexistence of rational and irrational truths (concrete and metaphysical) present in the imagery and enacted in the making process – ‘intuitively’ (cognitively) or ‘instinctually’ (through the body): “the thought of that which does not think” – both phenomenologically and pictorially contained in the finished work.
Cruz & Moran curated the exhibition Myth Material at The Old Waterworks, Southend, last summer. This exhibition continues their visual research into painterly process and the construction of meaning.
Domain of Sensible Knowledge will be showing at ASC Gallery from May 10th – June 6th. The exhibition opening will be held on Wednesday 10th May 6 – 9pm.

About the artists:
Tina Jenkins is currently doing her PhD in Practice Based Research in Fine Art at the University of Reading, where she also received her MFA.
Sally Kindberg completed a MFA at Goldsmiths in 2012, In 2008 she was selected for the Jerwood Contemporary Painters prize.
Mark Jackson graduated in 2006 from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. He has an upcoming solo exhibition at Block 336 this spring. He was selected for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2007 and Art Futures in 2008.
Stephanie Moran completed an MFA at Goldsmiths in 2014. Recent projects include book of found paintings, ‘The Picture Itself Represents a Moon’, published by Spiralbound/Susak Press; and a 2015 – 16 residency in the painting department of the School of Media, Art and Design at Canterbury Christ Church University. Moran was founding director of the Marmite Prize for Painting, 2008 – 2012.
Cynthia Cruz completed her MFA at Goldsmiths in 2014, winning the ACME studio award culminating in a solo show, The Girl Who Ate All Her Hair. In 2016 she was shortlisted for the Griffin art prize.
