Synthetic Realities presents a series of four visual works by artist Engin Demir, revolving around how contemporary subjectivity is reshaped in algorithmic systems. In a highly computerised environment, ‘reality’ no longer exists as a continuous, neutral empirical field; it gradually transforms into structural results generated by data operations, predictive logic, and allocation mechanisms. The individual’s action path, visibility, and choice space are pre-calculated and organised by the system through scoring, classification, and prediction mechanisms before the experience occurs.

This exhibition regards artificial intelligence as a fundamental structural condition that continues to reshape the organisational logic of our world. Under this condition, each person identified by the algorithm is observed, modeled, and quantified, and is also produced as an output result of the system’s calculation process. In his works, the artist constructs a series of highly programmed visual environments, in which the interface system, monitoring logic, and spatial structure are intertwined. Parallel time and space, control room perspective, grid-like urban landscape, and diverse work environments function as narrative elements rather than symbolic ones. These environments collectively simulate a state where actions, choices, and behaviours are constantly guided into predetermined paths, and ‘free will’ itself becomes part of system computation.

Ultimately, the exhibition points not to a fiction or technological illusion, but to the operational state of contemporary reality itself: a world continuously generated and organised by computation, where the boundary between experience and system output is constantly dissolving.

Through the multiple overlapping of images, sounds, and spaces, the audience is introduced into a completely new worldview. Here, ‘nature’ gradually presents as an environmental state generated in conjunction with technological systems, and humans also participate as components embedded in complex computing networks. The exhibition extends to open thinking on instability, generativity, and future forms of reality.

Engin Demir Artist Introduction

Engin Demir is an artist whose practice centres on digital imagery. His work explores the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence systems, data structures, and contemporary subjective experience. By constructing hyper-programmed visual environments, he investigates how ‘reality’,  ‘time’, and ‘subjectivity’ are redefined in an era dominated by computational technology.

Demir’s focus extends beyond technology’s shaping of environments to examine how algorithmic logic progressively permeates human perception and social order. As immediacy is supplanted by continuous computation, prediction and allocation, individual experience becomes subsumed within the rhythms of data systems. Through reconfigurations of scale, the body and systemic structures, his practice reveals humanity’s condition within technological networks. Within Demir’s work, the subject exists simultaneously as both observer and object of documentation and calibration.
