We are delighted to invite you to The Canvas as Court, a solo exhibition by painter Alice Mansfield, @alice__mansfield.

The exhibition draws on Philip Guston’s idea that the ‘canvas is a court where the artist is prosecutor, defendant, jury, and judge.’ As he described so acutely: “You cannot settle out of court. You are faced with what seems like an impossibility – fixing an image which you can tolerate.”

The pursuit of a tolerable image is what drives Mansfield’s work. Her practice encompasses painting and poetry, with both the canvas and the page acting as spaces to willingly make mistakes, strip away, and rework without consequence. Preoccupied with the physicality of paint, she exploits its inherent qualities to create images that sit between the abstract and the figurative, moments felt in paint.

Alice Mansfield (b. 1997) is a London-based painter originally from East Sussex. She holds a BA from King’s College London and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.
