Julie Derbyshire

Artist Bio

Julie Derbyshire is a photographic artist based in London. She works in the genres of landscape and still life and her practice is research based and process led. Informed by art history and by her own lived experience, Julie explores themes of fragility, transience and the universality of our shared human condition. She employs the medium of photography as the final distillation of a creative process that encompasses acts of fabrication, manipulation and disruption and experiments with different techniques, materials and visualisations to suit each series of work. Julie approaches photography as an instrument of illusion, to beguile rather than document. By exploring the potential of the photographic object to conjure new meaning, Julie invites the viewer to reflect and to question what lies beyond the image.

Julie holds an MA Photography (Distinction), London College of Communication (University of the Arts London) and a BA Photography (1st Class), University of Westminster and works from a studio based at the historic Chiswick House and Gardens. She exhibits regularly in the UK and internationally and her work is held is in private collections. Amongst a number of recognitions, Julie has been a finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize Venice and the Travers Smith Art Awards and was awarded the Photofusion Prize.

Artist Quote

“My favourite thing about being an artist is the opportunity it provides to express ideas, narratives and thoughts that I would otherwise find difficult to articulate and through my work to invite the viewer to reflect and question what lies beyond the image”.
