Almost Together

đź“… Friday 18th September
⏰ 6:30–9 pm
📍 ASC Streatham Hill, SW2 4TT

This exhibition considers the distance between inner worlds. Bringing together paintings and expanded material works by Loretta Yussuff and Cathalina Navarro Lagos, Almost Together explores intimacy, distance, and the inner worlds we can never fully know. It asks what it means to live alongside experiences we can never fully access—moving between moments of solitude, longing, connection, and observation. Private worlds offer comfort and protection, yet they can also become sites of isolation.

Throughout the exhibition, figures in moments of stillness in interiors sit alongside encounters with open landscapes and expansive skies, suggesting both the desire to retreat inward and the impulse to reach beyond oneself.

Working through distinct material languages:

Loretta Yussuff’s oil paintings incorporate cut canvas and thread.

Cathalina Navarro Lagos combines acrylic painting with collage to build layered, narrative compositions.

Through these differing approaches, both artists employ saturated colour and figuration to construct emotionally charged spaces in which psychological experience and the surrounding environments become closely intertwined.

Despite the geographical distance between them, the artists developed a shared understanding through an ongoing exchange of images, ideas, and intimate observations. Their long distance collaboration became a way of approaching one another through their artworks, while also confronting the limits of that proximity.

This distance creates a barrier, but also a space for imagining, observing, and trying to understand one another. Almost Together exists within this space between closeness and separation, where connection is always present, but never quite complete. Rather than seeking to overcome distance, the exhibition invites viewers to linger within the feeling of being almost together—considering intimacy not as complete understanding, but as the ongoing attempt to live amongst another person’s inner life while recognising its irreducible unknowability.
