Recurrence is the first of this years selected curatorial exhibitions to mark the 30th year anniversary of ASC. It has been curated by artist Jack Shearing who has a studio in ASC’s Streatham Hill site. Throughout 2025, eight exhibitions, chosen from an ASC wide call out will take place in ASC Gallery at The Handbag Factory.

This exhibition will bring together 11 artists that explores mise en abyme—a term coined by André Gide to describe the use of an image within an image or a story within a story. Through use of framing devices, repeated forms and fragmented bodies, the artists examine the boundaries between inner and outer worlds, challenging the nature of representation and linear perspective through painting and drawing. Each work serves as a threshold—hinting at something more ambiguous and elusive beyond the frame. The exhibition highlights the multifaceted nature of observation, revealing how images construct, distort, and reframe our perceptions.
